Although Brett¹s family were stricken with grief, they were still able to think of others and with the aid of St Vincent’s Hospital, decided to start a research fund, the aim of which being to one day find a cure for this disease so that other families may be prevented from going through what they just had.. The Brett Levien Sarcoma Cancer Foundation was soon established and Team Brett, the foundation¹s fund raising and social arm, was born shortly after.
Team Brett started as a group of Brett¹s friends and family participating in sporting and social events to raise money for the foundation. But since the team¹s first event, the City 2 Surf in 2006, our team has grown to be much more than that, including perfect strangers who just want to get involved, have fun and help out a very important good cause.
In 2007 the inaugural Team Brett Partay drew a crowd of 600 people with hundreds more who didn¹t buy tickets being turned away once the venue had reached capacity. The 2008 Partay will be at the same venue but with the exclusive use of the entire building which will increase our capacity to 1000 people. With over $250,000 raised in less than 2 years it was time to decide how best to put this much needed research funding to use. It was at this point the Foundation received a timely call from Cure Cancer Australia (CCA) - An organisation that has been raising money, awareness and funding cancer research grants for over 30 years. It seemed like a perfect fit so with their common goal, the Brett Levien Sarcoma Cancer Foundation and Cure Cancer Australia joined forces. The Brett Levien Sarcoma Cancer Foundation has recently funded its first two $75,000 research grants to promising young Australian medical researchers.
